Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME domain extension is the sole TLD planned for personal sites only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are known by. At first, only third-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to secure john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already registered third-level domain names remained running.
